Step into a time machine and travel back to 1970, where the beautiful coastal town of Vung Tau in Vietnam was bustling with excitement and stories waiting to be told. In these streets, amidst the backdrop of the Vietnam War, a hidden world of bars emerged, offering an escape from the harsh realities of war and providing solace, adventure, and camaraderie to the soldiers and locals alike.

The bars of Vung Tau were not just watering holes; they were havens in the midst of chaos. Each establishment had its unique charm and ambiance, immortalized in the memories of those who experienced their magic. Now, let us embark on a journey through time and explore the fascinating stories behind some of the iconic bars that graced Vung Tau's streets.

1. The Purple Haze: Surreality Unleashed

As the sun set over the horizon, casting hues of purple across the sky, one bar stood out from the rest - The Purple Haze. This psychedelic haven was a feast for the senses, with swirling lights, vibrant decor, and live music that transported patrons to a different reality. Every night, it drew in a diverse crowd, from soldiers seeking an escape to artists seeking inspiration. The Purple Haze epitomized the counterculture movement of the era, embracing free-spiritedness and paving the way for cultural revolution in Vung Tau.

2. The Saigon Rose: Beauty Underneath the Shadows

Tucked away in a dimly lit alley, The Saigon Rose was an enigmatic gem that attracted adventurers looking for intrigue. Its dark, mysterious interior created an air of secrecy, where secrets were shared and new alliances were formed. Behind the scenes, it was whispered that the Saigon Rose harbored connections to the black market, providing soldiers with illegal goods and services. However, these illicit activities were never confirmed, adding to the allure and dangerous charm of this hidden oasis.

3. The Bamboo Shack: A Taste of Vietnam

Amidst the influx of foreign cultures, the Bamboo Shack celebrated and embraced the local heritage of Vietnam. The bar was adorned with traditional bamboo decor, and the aroma of freshly brewed Vietnamese coffee filled the air. Patrons savored authentic Vietnamese cuisine while listening to the soothing melodies of traditional music. The Bamboo Shack acted as a cultural bridge, welcoming both soldiers and locals into a shared appreciation for the beauty of Vietnam and its people.

4. The Sea Serpent: Where Legends Collide

Sitting at the intersection of myths and reality, The Sea Serpent was a bar like no other. Its walls were adorned with images of legendary sea creatures, and its bartenders were believed to possess supernatural powers. Rumors spread that The Sea Serpent was a meeting ground for warriors and mythical beings, where stories of bravery and magic intermingled. It was said that those who frequented The Sea Serpent would be blessed with good fortune, an enticing promise that brought people back night after night.

5. The Sands of Time: A Haven for Romantics

Nestled along the shoreline, The Sands of Time offered a breathtaking view of the ocean and a haven for lovers seeking solace. The sound of waves crashing against the shore provided a soothing backdrop to heartfelt conversations and stolen glances. As soldiers wrote letters to their loved ones back home, they found comfort in the embrace of The Sands of Time, knowing that even amidst chaos, they could find moments of tenderness and love.

These bars, now lost to time, were the soul of Vung Tau during 1970. They were the meeting places where memories were made, friendships forged, and where soldiers and locals found solace amidst the turmoil of war. Today, the legacy of these bars lives on, whispering stories of a vibrant past and a time that will never be forgotten.

During the war in South Vietnam 1962-72, the coastal city of Vung Tau was a major rest and recuperation site for the US, Australian and New Zealand troops serving there. This is a list of bars, hotels and steam baths gathered in 1970 by the relevant Military Police offices for use in their duties.
Hopefully, the names of the bars will bring back memories of fun times with mates.
The item is in two parts - first, the original list with Vietnamese business name, street address, and then English language name.
The second part has these transposed, with the English language name followed by the street address and then Vietnamese name.
There are two photos of bars named in the content.
