An American Spirit: An American Epic

There is a unique spirit that has been woven into the very fabric of America, shaping its history and defining its people. An American Spirit: An American Epic is a captivating journey that takes us through the defining moments and characters that have helped shape this remarkable nation.
The Birth of America
The story of America begins with its birth - a nation born out of a revolutionary spirit and a desire for freedom. It was a spirit that fueled the courageous actions of individuals like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who dared to challenge the status quo and fight for the principles of liberty and justice.
Manifest Destiny
As America expanded its borders, driven by its belief in manifest destiny, the American spirit continued to guide its people towards new horizons. Pioneers and explorers like Daniel Boone and Lewis and Clark embarked on daring expeditions, pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible and revealing the vast potential of this unexplored land.

A Nation Divided
However, the American spirit was tested in one of the darkest chapters of its history - the Civil War. Brother fought against brother, as the nation grappled with the issue of slavery and the preservation of the union. Leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass rose to the occasion, challenging the nation to confront its deepest divisions and move towards a more united future.
Innovation and Progress
The American spirit was not only defined by conflict and struggle but also by its unyielding pursuit of innovation and progress. From the invention of the light bulb by Thomas Edison to the exploration of space by Neil Armstrong, America has continuously pushed the boundaries of science, technology, and human achievement. The American spirit has always been one of ingenuity and a refusal to accept limitations.
Diversity and Resilience
At the heart of the American spirit lies the strength that comes from its diversity. Throughout its history, people from all corners of the world have come to America, seeking a better life and a chance to pursue their dreams. It is this mosaic of cultures and ideas that has made America strong and resilient, able to overcome challenges and adapt to change.
The Spirit Lives On
Today, the American spirit continues to inspire and shape the nation. It can be seen in the bravery of our military servicemen and women, who sacrifice for the ideals of freedom and democracy. It can be seen in the countless charitable acts of Americans, who lend a helping hand to those in need. And it can be seen in the everyday pursuit of the American Dream, the belief that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
An American Spirit: An American Epic reminds us of the rich tapestry that makes up the history of our nation. From its birth to its present, the American spirit continues to define what it means to be an American - a spirit of courage, resilience, and innovation. It is a story that deserves to be celebrated and remembered, for it is the story of America itself.

An American Spirit is an epic poem that is built around the 1975 Menominee Warrior Society takeover of the Alexian Brothers Novitiate near Gresham, Wisconsin. The takeover made international news at the time and was one of the major protests against American society generated out of the AIMS movement of the 1970s.The epic itself contains multiple stories. There is the story of the takeover itself, but also companion stories that encompass the rise of the Posse Comitatus, a right wing Christian right militia, a religious cult whose compound is located near the Novitiate's grounds, a secondary protest that leads to the burning of farms and houses, incidents in the nearby town of Shawano, and mythological events rising from both Menominee culture and Christianity. The interrelated stories build and build toward a conflagration that contains mystical truths, triumph, love, courage, madness, and tragedy, all swirling around and around as the poem explodes into an epic climax. The poem is an exploration as well as a meditation upon Twenty-first century America and its diverse populations. Written before the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and the more recent rise of white supremacist movements in the United States, it also exists as a chilling prophecy that no reader will forget. As the former Chair of the English Department at the University of Wisconsin--Green Bay expressed it after spending a summer reading the manuscript, "it's a story that invaded my dreams".
