Explore the Angkor Thom, an ancient walled city that once served as the capital of the Khmer Empire. Marvel at the smiling faces of the Bayon Temple, each stone visage hiding profound mysteries waiting to be unraveled. The atmosphere is nothing short of magical as you wander through the overgrown jungle, engulfed in the whispers of a civilization long past.

A Tapestry of Natural Wonders

While the Greece of the East is known for its rich history, it also boasts a myriad of natural wonders. From expansive rice terraces to cascading waterfalls and lush rainforests, this enchanting paradise is a feast for the senses.

Embark on a journey to Banaue, home to the breathtaking Banaue Rice Terraces. These terraces, carved into the mountainside by ancient hands, create a remarkable tapestry of emerald green and golden hues. Take a guided tour and learn the ancient techniques used by the Ifugao people to cultivate these awe-inspiring terraces.

For those seeking tranquility, venture to the Kawasan Falls. Situated in the heart of a lush jungle, this three-tiered waterfall will leave you spellbound. Dive into the cerulean waters and allow the powerful cascade to wash away your worries, immersing you in a moment of pure bliss.

A Culinary Adventure for the Senses

No trip to the Greece of the East would be complete without indulging in the delightful and diverse cuisine that this country has to offer. Prepare your taste buds for a culinary adventure like no other.

Sample the flavors of the street food scene, where bustling night markets come alive. Savor the tangy and vibrant flavors of freshly prepared papaya salad, a staple of local cuisine. Sink your teeth into savory banh mi, a fusion of French and Vietnamese flavors, and let the explosion of tastes and aromas transport you to another world.

For the adventurous foodie, be sure to try balut, a delicacy that may surprise you. Balut is a popular street food made from duck eggs containing a partially developed embryo. While it may be an acquired taste, it offers a unique culinary experience that you won't find anywhere else.

At the height of the Ukrainian crisis, Stefan Weidner travelled to Lviv in search of its pan-European origins. He found little evidence there of the current conflict, but numerous traces of the city’s Jewish history. He also encountered another writer who visited Lviv (or Lemberg, as it was known under the German-speaking Hapsburgs) in 1924: Alfred Döblin. Döblin’s prescient account of his journey provided both a reference point and a contrast for Weidner’s poetic re-experiencing of Europe through the fluctuating history of its eastern margin.

Stefan Weidner (b. 1967) is an author, translator, and scholar of Islam. He lives in Cologne.
