At the height of the Ukrainian crisis, Stefan Weidner travelled to Lviv in search of its pan-European origins. He found little evidence there of the current conflict, but numerous traces of the city’s Jewish history. He also encountered another writer who visited Lviv (or Lemberg, as it was known under the German-speaking Hapsburgs) in 1924: Alfred Döblin. Döblin’s prescient account of his journey provided both a reference point and a contrast for Weidner’s poetic re-experiencing of Europe through the fluctuating history of its eastern margin.
Stefan Weidner (b. 1967) is an author, translator, and scholar of Islam. He lives in Cologne.
