It covers the head, neck, and face, leaving only the eyes and sometimes the mouth exposed. Balaclavas are often used in outdoor activities such as skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and even motorcycling, as they offer wind and cold protection.
However, balaclavas have evolved to become more than just functional gear; they have also become a fashionable accessory. With various patterns, colors, and designs available, balaclavas have become a stylish option for those who want to make a unique fashion statement.

Materials You'll Need:
- Size 8 knitting needles
- Worsted weight yarn
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
- Scissors
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Cast on 80 stitches using your preferred cast-on method.
2. Begin the ribbed pattern by knitting 2 stitches, then purling 2 stitches. Repeat this pattern until the end of the row.
3. Continue knitting rows in the ribbed pattern until the piece measures approximately 10 inches in length.
4. Create the eye opening: On the next row, knit the first 25 stitches, then bind off the next 30 stitches. Knit the remaining 25 stitches.
5. Continue knitting the two sections separately in the ribbed pattern for approximately 5 inches.
6. To shape the crown, decrease 2 stitches at the beginning and end of every row for 5 rows.
7. Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the tapestry needle and slip the remaining stitches onto the needle. Pull tightly to close the top of the balaclava.
8. Fold the balaclava in half, making sure the eye opening aligns properly. Sew the sides of the balaclava together using the tapestry needle and yarn.
9. Weave in any loose ends and trim excess yarn.
