Als der Tanzbär Atta Troll und seine Frau Mumma auf einem Marktplatz tanzen sollen, kann Atta Troll seine Gefangenschaft nicht länger ertragen. Zurück bei seinen sechs Bärenkindern hält er vor ihnen politische Reden und sinniert über die Schlechtigkeit des Menschen. Lange genug habe das Tier unter dem Menschen gelitten, nun sei es Zeit für Freiheit, Gleichheit und Einigkeit. Die Erzählsituation wandelt sich und der Ich-Erzähler geht höchstpersönlich in den Pyrenäen auf Bärenjagd, um Atta Troll zu erlegen. Mit der Hilfe der Hexe Uraka gelingt ihm dies auch - und der revolutionäre Atta Troll wird zum Bettvorleger. So endet das Märchen, der gesellschaftlichen Realität angemessen, eher pessimistisch als hoffnungsvoll...

Atta Troll ist ein Versepos von Heinrich Heine, das 1841 geschrieben und 1843 veröffentlicht wurde. Im letzten Kapitel schreibt Heine: "Ach, es ist vielleicht das letzte / Freie Waldlied der Romantik".

Heinrich Heine (geb. 1797 in Düsseldorf, gestorben 1856 in Paris) war einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Dichter, Journalisten und Schriftsteller des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er gilt als letzter Dichter der Romantik und prägte die deutsche Sprache nachhaltig. Heine machte die Sprache des Alltags lyrikfähig und entwickelte erstmals aus Reiseberichten, Zeitungsartikeln und Feuilletons künstlerische Kostbarkeiten. Sein Werk lässt sich aufgrund seiner Vielfältigkeit nicht präzise einer literarischen Epoche zuordnen. Zwar geht Heine aus der Romantik hervor, gilt aber gleichzeitig als Überwinder dieser Strömung. In seinem Werk finden sich die revolutionären Ideen des Vormärz, aber auch Elemente der Aufklärung sowie des Realismus. Als kritischer, politisch engagierter Journalist, Satiriker und Polemiker war Heine sowohl bewundert als auch gefürchtet. Wegen seiner jüdischen Herkunft und seiner politischen Haltung wurde er darüber hinaus von Antisemiten und Nationalisten angefeindet, was sein Leben, sein Werk und dessen Rezeptionsgeschichte prägte. Heine war einer der ersten deutschen Autoren, dessen Werke in allen Weltsprachen zu lesen waren.
