Today I can reveal a great product idea and business opportunity for anyone skilled with brushes and pens, or who knows someone who is a skilled artist and wants to make a little extra cash from their talents.

I came across this new and very exciting business opportunity while researching the potential value of a handful of dog prints I’d just bought to resell on eBay.

That’s when I spotted the strangest looking Scottish Terrier I have ever seen.

This Scottie wasn’t what anyone might call attractive, but even so images of this particular Scottish Terrier had sold more than seventy times in the previous month alone, and more than four hundred times on eBay in the past twelve months.

And more surprising still, every single one of those four hundred plus images of a cartoon Scottish Terrier had been hand painted by the same person and described on eBay as ‘ACEO’.

ACEO, short for ‘Art Card Editions and Originals’, developed from another very popular art-based product called artist trading cards - ATCs - which are miniature works of art introduced by the early impressionist painters and used then, and now, as business cards for artists to pass on to fellow artists and to potential buyers and distributors for their work. Artist trading cards were never intended to be sold, compared to ACEOs for which profit is the main prerequisite.

One thing all ATCs and ACEOs have in common is that every single one measures exactly 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches. Or I should say, one thing they once had in common, because lately some other sized cards have entered the market, but the standard size seems to remain most popular.

Below are the highest price ACEOs on eBay from the last few weeks at the time of writing, but I have spotted these tiny, original artist painted cards fetching much more for the right subject from the right artist.
